Australian Bushfire Benefit
This night will be a showcase of local talent. Proceeds from this benefit will be distributed to The Australian Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery Fund and WIRES (Wildlife Information, Rescue and Education Services).
One of the biggest natural disasters ever to face Australia is currently unfolding. Record-breaking temperatures and months of severe drought have fuelled a series of massive bushfires across the country. As of January 9, 25 people have lost their lives, including three volunteer firefighters, and about 40 more people are currently missing. More than 6.3 million hectares of bush, forest and parks have been burned, and approximately 3000 buildings have been destroyed. An estimated half a billion animals have been killed, with many more being displaced. Several species of flora and fauna are likely to be endangered or extinct once this catastrophe subsides. Unfortunately, this is only the beginning of the bushfire season in Australia. Even after the bushfires are out, this disaster will impact the country and the people who live there for many years to come.
